The Friends celebrated the twentieth anniversary of the Book and Author Luncheon this year with speaker Lisa Wingate, New York Times best-selling author, who is from Austin. Lisa drew about 300 to the event, held at the Christ the King Catholic Church’s new community meeting facility. We used proceeds from the event plus on-hand funds to help pay $10,000 for the library’s renovation and playground, plus $4,600 for a new outdoor book drop. An additional $3,500 was used to purchase books given to children in the library’s Summer Reading program and at Christmas on the Chisholm Trail. Some members of The Friends participated in the Education-Connection reading program as community volunteers reading with, and sometimes to, a specific elementary student. Dr. Malinda Golden, BISD Superintendent, and Gabrielle Nino, Assistant Superintendent of Teaching and Learning, visited the March board meeting to share some challenges facing schools today.
